Foster parents are a tremendously important addition to our facility. Years ago rehabilitators used to attempt to raise orphans by hand. The result was frequently less than successful. REGI foster parents are usually non-releasable birds that live at our center and function as parents when orphans of their same species comes in for rehabilitation. Occasionally, birds still recovering from their own injury may foster chicks of their own species. In some cases adults have been released with the youngsters they have raised while at REGI. Avian species are exceptional parents and usually don't hesitate to take on the chore of rearing a youngster that is not theirs biologically.

Many of the young birds are with us briefly until they can be replaced into their own or other wild nest. Some of the young birds have injuries resulting from the long falls and sudden stops from their own nests. Having a parent bird of their own species during their time in rehabilitation is not only comforting for the chick, but important for myriad of biologic reasons. Young birds must maintain the proper vocalizations and behavior in order to be accepted into the wild society. The foster parents keep the chick well associated with its own species.
